What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis or as we define it Plantar fasciaopathy is condition of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. This tissue provides support for the arch of the foot and absorbs shock during activities like walking and running. When the plantar fascia is overstressed or strained, it can develop tiny tears, leading to thickening and pain, especially in the heel area.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Heel Pain: The most common symptom is a sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest.
  • Pain that Decreases with Activity: Pain often improves after walking around but may return after long periods of standing or after exercise.
  • Tenderness: The bottom of the foot, near the heel, may feel tender or sore to the touch.

Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

  1. Overuse: Activities that put repeated stress on the heel, like running, jumping, or long periods of standing, can cause the plantar fascia to strain.
  2. Foot Structure: Flat feet, high arches, or an abnormal walking pattern can lead to increased stress on the plantar fascia.
  3. Improper Footwear: Shoes without proper arch support or cushioning can increase stress on the plantar fascia.
  4. Tight Calf Muscles: Tightness in the calf muscles or Achilles tendon can increase the strain on the plantar fascia.
  5. Weight: Excess body weight can put added pressure on the plantar fascia, increasing the risk of inflammation.
