What is Ankle Pain?

Ankle pain is discomfort or pain in or around the ankle joint, which can affect one or both ankles. This pain can vary in severity and may be accompanied by symptoms such as swelling, stiffness, bruising, redness, or warmth. Ankle pain can make walking, running, and other activities challenging.

Common Causes of Ankle Pain

  1. Injury:
    1. Ankle Sprains: One of the most common causes, occurring when ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn.
    2. Fractures: Broken bones in the ankle can cause sharp pain, swelling, and inability to bear weight.
    3. Achilles Tendon Injuries: The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the heel, and injuries to it, like tendinitis or rupture, can cause pain in the back of the ankle
  2. Overuse and Strain:
    1. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the ankle due to repetitive strain.
    2. Stress Fractures: Tiny cracks in the bone due to overuse, often occurring in athletes or people who are on their feet a lot.
    3. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa (fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints), which can cause pain and stiffness.
  3. Medical Conditions:
    1. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can cause chronic ankle pain and stiffness.
    2. Gout: A form of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals, often leading to sudden, severe pain in the ankle.
    3. Flat Feet: Having little or no arch can lead to ankle strain and pain.
    4. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: A condition where the tibial nerve is compressed, causing pain, numbness, or tingling in the ankle.
