The Achilles Tendon is a strong, robust tendon that inserts into the back of your heel. The Achilles plays a key role during walking, running and activity. There are many differential diagnosis that can affect the posterior heel, so understanding the specific diagnosis is important when establishing an appropriate treatment plan.
The most common cause of posterior heel pain is Achilles Tendon degeneration and overload. This can be diagnosed as either mid-section Achilles tendinopathy or insertional Achilles tendinopathy. The Achilles Tendon originates from the calf muscles, behind the knee and inserts into the heel bone. The Achilles allows movement of the foot, ankle and knee during walking and running. The Achilles is a common site of injury, and we have access to excellent evidence based treatment options within South West Podiatry clinics including Shockwave Therapy. Tissue damage can easily be identified with the use of diagnostic ultrasound. Specific members of the Podiatry team are able to utilise diagnostic ultrasound to review differential diagnosis such as a degenerative soft tissue trauma, Achilles Tendon tear, tendon rupture or bursa formation.
